Uses of Modafinil

Do you have a recurrent, uncontrollable, and excessive desire to sleep?

Some medical conditions are characterised by sleep disorders.

If you have narcolepsy, you will find it difficult to control your wake-sleep cycles.

If you work unholy hours or maintain highly irregular work schedules which disrupt normal sleep patterns and rhythm, you are likely to develop shift work sleep disorder.

If you have breathing problems arising from difficulties with the upper airway, you are likely to find it difficult to sleep properly because of chronic sleep interruption.

Doctors prescribe Modafinil address the excessive sleepiness usually associated with conditions like sleep apnea, SWSD or shift work sleep disorder, or narcolepsy.

An increasing number of people are also using Modafinil off-label to fight neurological fatigue, enhance cognition, and promote alertness.

Doctors prescribe the medication for children with attention deficit disorder.

History of Modafinil

Michel Jouvet is a professor in experimental medicine and a neurophysiologist. He is acknowledged for his extensive research on sleep and dreams. Jouvet and Lafon Laboratories in France are recognised for having developed Modafinil in the latter part of the 1970s.

Lafon Laboratories came out with a succession of benzhydryl sulfinyl chemicals. Among this was the compound Adrafinil, the precursor of Modafinil. The compound was found effective for enhancing wakefulness and mental alertness. It soon became popular as an effective remedy for narcolepsy.

The company soon discovered Modafinil as the active component and principal metabolite of Adrafinil. It made certain modifications in Modafinil which made the drug more potent than its parent Adrafinil. There were also far fewer side effects.

Adrafinil was soon discontinued as a medical drug.

Modafinil was approved in France for medical use in 1994.

Modafinil is now sold worldwide under many trade names including Alertec, Forcilin, Modasomil, Modiodal, Vigimax, and Modiwake, among many.

In the United States, Modafinil is sold as Provigil by Cephalon, Inc, the biopharmaceutical company which bought Lafon Laboratories in 2001.
